National biodiversity photo exhibition held in Beijing

Under the direction of Ministry of Environmental Protection of China (MEP), a national photo exhibition of biodiversity was held in Beijing on 28 October by China Forum of Environmental Journalists (CFEJ).

 

This event welcomed the attendance of Mr. Pan Yue, Vice Minister of MEP.

 

150 works were divided into three categories. Works in China Action category reflected a series of Chinese government’s activities since the signing of the Convention on Biodiversity in 1993.

 

Public Participation category reflected active participation of the public to biodiversity conservation.

 

Toward Harmony category showed growing friendship between human being and nature thanks to public’s increasing awareness of environmental protection,

 

These works were selected from nearly 2000 works of Chinese professional, unprofessional and youth photographers in the third nationwide photo competition themed “Biodiversity and poverty alleviation” launched by CFEJ, which belonged to China Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), since June 2010.

 

Its purpose is to promote participation of the public in biodiversity conservation. 

.

In this competition, two works got the special prizes are <"Giant Panda " in water> and "Harmony" of professional and unprofessional groups. The works "Protect Chinese sturgeon", "Birds in the spring", "Peach flowers"," Bring disaster", "For the future", "Baby worm " … got the first prizes.

 

Chinese youth was so interested in the exhibition. Pupils from Beijing Photography Primary School were invited to attend the event and they showed their great interest in photography.

 

“I study photography for 40 minutes a week in the school. I desire to become a professional photographer in future”, the boy Tian Jie said.  

 

After the exhibition, the highest appreciated works would be sent to Japan to present at an environmental exhibition there.

 

Pan Yue said that the United Nations declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity with the theme "Biodiversity is life, biodiversity is our life." Chinese government attaches great importance to biodiversity consersation and made China 2010 Action Plan. The country has carried out a series of activities.

 

 

Vice Minister Pan Yue stressed that in the past 20 years, China has actively carried out the Convention on Biodiversity and gained remarkable achievementspraised and recognized widespread by international community. However, it must be clearly recognized that the declining trend of biodiversity has not been effectively curbed and it is difficult to reverse this decline in a short time. Biodiversity conservation in China is facing tremendous pressure and severe challenges.
