Hangzhou – Heaven on earth

There are Chinese sayings as "Heaven Above, Suzhou and Hangzhou below” or "Be born in Suzhou, live in Hangzhou, eat in Guangzhou, die in Liuzhou." The sayings praise the natural scenery of Hangzhou. Besides, Hangzhou is also famous for its long-standing culture and tradition.

Under the official field trip for FK participants, Hangzhou is one of destinations arranged for me and the Lao participant to discover natural scenery and culture of China. Finally, my desire for long time to visit this place came true. After two hours on the train from Shanghai, we arrived Hangzhou.

Hangzhou is in the North of Zhejiang province of Western China and in Yangtze river delta. As one of the most renowned and prosperous cities of China for much of the last 1,000 years, Hangzhou is also well-known for its beautiful natural scenery. It is often known as one of the most beautiful cities in China and has been ranked as one of the ten most scenic cities in China.

One of Hangzhou's most popular sights is West Lake (Xi Hu). West Lake Hangzhou is located in the western area of Hangzhou City's center and itself covers an area of 6 km2 and includes some of Hangzhou's most notable historic and scenic places including historical pagodas, cultural sites, as well as the natural beauty of the lake and hills. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides. The West Lake is said to be the incarnation of Xi Shi, one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, who was born in Hangzhou.

From the West Lake bank, we can see the high tower of Leifeng Pagoda, where attached with the legend of Lady White Snake and a sad love story. It’s a famous legend in China that I read since I was a child and really enjoyed. Here, we can see the vestiges of the fights between the monk and the white snake when the monk used his power to create a strong wind with sand and dust to cover the snake. That is also meaning of the pagoda’s name. From the highest floor of the Leifeng tower, we can see an overview of the west lake with the beauty of hills, lake and ancient houses. In one side of the lake, there is the beautiful bridge with green willow trees and lotus flowers blooming where the girl (turned into from the white snake) met the man when it’s raining. The man gave the girl his umbrella then they fell in love.

Not far from the West Lake, we visited Linyin temple. It also named Temple of Soul’s Retreat in English. Be sheltered by forested hills, with many old trees, groves of bamboo, grottoes, and quiet and beautiful surroundings, the Lingyin Temple is not only one of the most famous temples in south of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River but also one of the ten most famous ancient Buddhist temple in China. The temple includes many buildings, towers and halls. There are many rock carvings of Buddhist on mountain peaks and grottoes. Among the carvings, the vivid image of the fat bare-bellied Buddha with a smiling face has become the symbol of the Lingyin Temple.

Beside scenic spots, Hangzhou is also famous for some its products especially silk, pottery and tea. Hangzhou is best known for originating Longjing, a notable variety of green tea. There are about seven types of Longjing tea but the best type is Xi Hu Longjing (West lake Longjing). Xi Hu Long Jing is grown near West lake in Hangzhou hence its name. A man who live in Hangzhou introduced us that this kind of tea is often served to the leaders in important events. With his kind invitation, it’s a great chance for us to try Longjing tea in a tea house by the West Lake and listen traditional Chinese music played by a young girl with the traditional music instrument. In the night time with a bit raining, drinking the good tea and listening traditional Chinese music, seeing the beautiful scenery of the West Lake, it’s a special feeling for me.

Arriving Hangzhou, visitors offend spend night time to explore the culture and tradition through walking in night market and old quarter of Qing He Fang. Along the old quarter, two sides are shopping stores which sell traditional hand made goods such as tea, food, products made of silk such as clothes, umbrellas or Chinese hand-held folding fans ext. Here you can see how they make dry tea or making traditional cake by hand.

Leaving Hangzhou but the beauty of nature, tradition and culture of this area still remain in my mind.
