South-South Exchange Program

Report for the month of July, 2011

Name of reporting person     : Nguyen Thi Oanh

Host Organization           : China Environmental Forum of Journalists

Sending Organization     : Vietnam Environmental Forum of Journalist

Reporting date          : July 5th 2011

I.                   Overview:

-  Main figures/characteristics of the month absorbed by the participants.

-  Besides, some of the following contents should also be listed such as main achievements, difficulties/obstacles, and recommendations, etc.

II.                Activities implemented during the reporting period:

There are totally 6 main activities have been conducted by participant Nguyen Thi Oanh in July, such as:

-          Writing an article on the topic “ Beijingers and bicycle transportation”

-          Continuing taking part in Chinese course

-          Teaching English at CFEJ’s office

-          Finishing supporting administrative work at CFEJ’s office

-          Exploring the ancient hutong Nanlouguxiang, Downtown Beijing

-          Travelling to some tourist destinations located in Shanxi province, China

DETAILS:

1)      Writing an article about the no-smoke transportation in Beijing:

I worked on this topic for nearly one week, with regard to taking picture and collecting information about means of transportation in Beijing via internet, social networks and colleagues’ opinions. Gao Kuangyun, as known as my supervisor in this exchange, is a helpful person when he gave me a hand in posing necessary pictures (even though I didn’t use them in my article) and giving needed informative opinions. This article was summited to VFEJ for editing in July 22th 2011.

There is no severe problem in the writing process, except for the language barrier. For example, when I was going to interview some of my neighbors about their opinions on using bicycles as a very normal mean of transportation at work, I couldn’t get their points while they changed the conversation into Chinese.

In spite of that fact, after all, I realized an interesting culture with bicycles in China, which is quite different from the one in Vietnam modern society: in China, you can go to work by a normal bicycle and wear a plain office dress without being stared/judged as “a weird man” by other people.

From this activity, I would like to receive more advisory help from the sending organization, Vietnam Forum of Environmental Journalists to improve the writing article skills.

2)      Continuing taking part in Chinese course

Two times a week, the tutoring Chinese course has been conducted by my Chinese tutor, named Wang Fan. So far, we have been on class for 2 months with passing 5 main lessons of the textbook “Contemporary Chinese for Beginners”, published by Sinolingua.

Wang teacher is a dynamic tutor when she helped me with lots of conversations in and out of the textbook. As a result, I am now confident to go out for exploring Beijing with using public transportation, shopping and communicating with Chinese at a basic level.
There is no problem with my Chinese course. I expect that it will take place as well as it has used to.

3)      Teaching English at CFEJ’s office

The English class has been run one time a week at CFEJ’s office after CFEJ’s President asked me to help them learning Chinese at the welcome party in July 6th 2011, conducted by myself and my supervisor Gao Kuangyun.

August is the holiday time for the whole staffs of CFEJ, so the English class has been temporarily canceled until the beginning of September.

Thanks to this class, I have had more chances to get familiar with Chinese colleagues and practice Chinese conversation.

4)      Finishing administrative works at CFEJ’s office

After two weeks dealing with documents, paper envelops and glues, I finished the packing environmental documents before they were sent to the China Post Office.

There is no difficulty during this work.

5)      Exploring one of the best preserved hutong in Downtown Beijing – Nanlouguxiang

I came up to this ancient valley (hutong) at the first time, when my supervisor told me that there is a nice Vietnamese restaurant located next to this hutong. Then I have been there for several times for walking around different small valleys in Nanlouguxiang and searching for my ongoing article about the Heshen, a Manchu official of the Qing Dynasty.

However, I have been got stuck in specifying the location and information related to Heshen’s mansion located in Nanlouguxiang. So, I cannot be able to finish my article until now.

6)      Field trip in Shanxi Province

The 4-day-3-night field trip conducted by CFEJ and guided by the supervisor Gao Kuangyun, with the appearance of 3 participants from Vietnam, Laos, Philippines and my Chinese tutor, took place from the early morning of July 28th to the late night of July 31th 2011.

Our group has been to the ancient city of Pingyao, some mansions of Qiao Family and Wutai Mountain. During the field trip, we got lots of chances to experience old Chinese culture as well as the daily life of Chinese people at many corners, in which, inspired me to write an article about them. However, I haven’t finished that article at this reporting time.

I do expect to have more field trips in the upcoming times of my exchange in China; It is a really good way for participant like me to make a significant contribution in building capacity and raising effect of Fredskorpset’s exchange.

III.              Ongoing activities:

There are two ongoing activities which are in processing in these days, including studying Chinese and writing 3 assignment-articles on Nanlouguxiang, Shanxi field trip and the International Agenda on Species Biodiversity (which happened August 3rd 2011).

I have still kept studying Chinese with my Chinese tutor and watching some TV’s programs in Chinese. So, I expect that I can understand more Chinese people’s conversations.

With regards to finish writing the 3 articles, I hope that I can have them done in the first 15 days of August, and receiving some editing helps from the sending organization VFEJ.

IV.             Challenges and reasons:

I have had some obstacles during this period that caused me not to finish my articles as good as expected.

Reasons: The 1st is language barrier, and the 2rd is lacking information of Chinese culture.

V.                Lesson Learnt:

It is vital to take times to self-learning about Chinese culture before approaching that kind of culture in person.

VI.             Activities planned for the next month:

Here is my learning and working plan in August, with the priority is given to the 1st and the 2rd orders:

1-      Finishing writing some target articles

2-      Studying Chinese

3-      Learning the environmental journalism and the journalism writing skills

4-      Exploring Beijing’s hutongs and art

5-      Improving my spoken and written English.

6-      Waiting for editing work at China Radio International.

VII.          Conclusion and recommendation:

I expect to be able to work at China Radio International in the upcoming time.

Annexes: Any products, articles, specific reports, 10-month working plan should be put in annexes.
